On time, Alexis strolled down the staircase wearing a dark plaid skirt and white tank top. Her hair was brushed, teeth cleaned, and held her head up high and turned in front of Crow as if she was under inspection.
“Better.” Was all Crow said before he turned to open the door to the front room. There, sitting on a couch facing her was blond-haired man who appeared close to Crow’s age. He wore glasses and a dark blue suit. Alexis stepped in, as the man rose before her.
“Ms. Alexis Rune I presume?” The man asked, “Impressive, she does have the Rune look, doesn’t she, Avery?” On the surface it sounded like a compliment, but to Alexis there was an insult in there somewhere… like he felt surprised at her even being there.
“I’ll leave you two to discuss your business.” Crow said in a stiff tone.
“Tea?” The man asked, he was answered by a firm slam of the door.
“Do, you two know each other or something?” Alexis asked.
“Yes, we went to Hogwarts together. Our families… are very close. But, let me introduce myself, I’m Professor Draper, the Charms teacher at Hogwarts. I’ve been asked to come and confirm your enrolment as well as classes for your upcoming year. We do not get very many transfer students.” He said, giving Alexis a warm smile.
“What exactly do you need from me?” Alexis asked, taking a seat in an armchair across from the wizard.
“We already received your transcripts and grades from your previous school in Japan, you will be entering our fourth year curriculum. You see, at year three, we ask our students to pick at least two extra classes. Given your past class information, we thought it would be wise to allow you to choose which extra classes you would like to take yourself.” Professor Draper then passed a cream coloured parchment paper across the coffee table towards her, on it was a list of what Alexis assumed were the available classes she could take.
“Just two?” She asked, noting a few she was interested in, and some that she was confused why they were optional.
“You may pick all of them if you wish, we have ways to help facilitate such busy schedules.” He replied.
It didn’t seem like a choice she should make on the spot, but it felt like she would have to.
“Divination, Ancient Runes, Care of Magical Creatures.” Alexis said after a few minutes of deep, critical thinking. She was surprised by what was considered elective courses.
“An interesting combination.” Draper said with a nod of his head. He brought out his wand and with a flick of his wrist, a letter appeared on the table. “This is your school letter, and a list of supplies. Given that you are new to Hogwarts, there is another list of additional books that may be helpful. Are there any questions you would like to ask while I’m here? I understand you have not been to a boarding school before, it may be a challenge.”
“I can handle that.” Alexis said, feeling a little put off. “But, why is Muggle Studies optional? Shouldn’t that be a mandatory class?”
The professor chucked to himself. “True, the muggles have expanded greatly, their technology has advanced quickly as well. However, that is their lifestyle, not ours.”
“So… is there some rule against laptops and cell phones?”
“Well, there isn’t, except there won’t be any outlets for you to recharge, and part of the spells around Hogwarts prevents any muggle technology from working.”
“Wait, what?” Alexis asked, her eyes wide with shock. “How do you do assignments? Research? Without search engines, or printers?”
“It’s called a library, which has a lot of fantastic books that cover all subject you can think of, and paper and quill.” Draper said, looking amused at Alexis’s little outburst. “There may be some cultural gaps, the students and Professors at Hogwarts are very helpful and I’m sure you’ll be able to figure things out. You appear like a sharp girl to me.”
“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind.” Alexis said, her impression towards the Charms Teacher dwindling every time he opened his mouth. He kept smiling at her, staring at her, ss if his handsome looks was supposed to make what he said sound more positive than how Alexis really heard them.
“If that is everything, I believe my purpose here is finished.” Draper raised to his feet, Alexis followed him out of the front room. “I look forward to seeing you at Hogwarts.”
“Yeah, me too.” Alexis said forcing a smile, which faded the second she closed the front door behind him.
“Is he gone?” Crow asked coming out of the kitchen. “Everything went alright?”
“I don’t think I like Professor Draper that well.” Alexis asked, sounding a bit mystified herself at the conclusion she had made. It wasn’t that he did anything wrong, he was professional – but his tone, just seemed to put her off.
“No, huh? Well, that means his charm didn’t work on you. About time he found his match. He’s been using that nice boy attitude and smile for years to get what he wants. No magic, just natural manipulation.” He looked down at the letter in her hand. “Now that we were able to pry you away from your upstairs haven, care for an actual meal in the kitchen for a change?”
